Be A Lifter and Praise-Lets

Boys Town:

Today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders, innovators, and hope for the future. While some children have many opportunities to shine in these areas, others don’t, because they are struggling to survive poverty, abuse, neglect, and families in crisis. Regardless of a person’s background, race, or religion, Boys Town believes that everyone deserves the chance to reach their full potential.

Unfortunately, even with the many young lives we save and change, there are still far too many boys and girls who could benefit from our help but don’t know how to find it. We hope you can help increase awareness to those youth (and their families) who need the unique assistance our Hotline services provide.

We have grown to become a national organization that reaches communities from coast to coast, and our scope has expanded to include in-home family counseling, health care and programs to rebuild at-risk schools.

One of our services, provided free of charge, is the Boys Town National Hotline®, a 24/7 crisis hotline for kids and parents. It provides a website specifically for teenagers called www.YourLifeYourVoice.org .  For 30 years, the Boys Town National Hotline® and its extended services have been answering the call when children and parents need immediate, professional, and compassionate assistance, answering 150,000 calls, emails, texts, and chats a year.

Be A Lifter
This PSA takes on one of the most prevalent and toxic issues affecting teen depression. “Bullying” is a behavior that happens in any and every teen environment. Our spot focuses on a popular teen student who is – not maliciously – diminishing another, less popular teen. This story reveals that some bullies might even be depressed themselves – which accounts for their passive, bullying behavior. For a bullied teen, we suggest that – while the bullied student might be tempted to “push back” against the bully – a more constructive and rewarding approach is to “rise above” the situation. By “lifting up” one’s classmates and even reaching out to befriend your bully, a more lasting and profound difference can result. In “Be A Lifter” our bullied girl reaches out with a kind gesture toward her bully, resulting in a new bonding. Taking the high road works! Our themed message is “Be A Lifter”.

Praise-Lets
Parents tend to react most when kids misbehave. That’s why Boys Town wants to flip the script and focus on praising kids. Did you know PRAISING kids FOUR TIMES for every time you correct them can transform their behavior and your relationship? Boys Town wants to make it easy for everyone to remember this 4-1 rule by encouraging parents to visit parenting.org/praise to see how it works, request their own FREE Praise-lets and explore other great ways to teach love with praise – because every kid deserves to hear they’re doing great!
